Urban Pantry: Tips and Recipes for a Thrifty, Sustainable and Seasonal Kitchen Review

Urban Pantry: Tips and Recipes for a Thrifty, Sustainable and Seasonal Kitchen

I have a huge bookshelf full of cookbooks. In fact, I will not allow myself to purchase cookbooks anymore, because I do not have any room to store them. That being said, 'Urban Pantry', which I just acquired, is so worth the small amount of space it takes up! Every single recipe is one that I will try, which is saying a lot--usually I take only 1 or 2 recipes away from a cookbook this size. The author writes in a voice that makes you feel like she's right there in the kitchen with you--and her words are practical and fun.
So far, I've tried the berry syrup, cracker recipe (best!), and am working on the ginger beer. I have been cooking for a long time, and still learned a lot from this book. I have pretty much every ingredient the recipes call for in my pantry, which make the recipes extremely accessible. The pictures are beautiful, and overall the entire reading experience inspiring. You too, can preserve in small batches, make your own crackers and sodapop at home, all without spending a million years and a million dollars doing it!
Highly recommended!

Raw Food In Ten Minutes: How to make the best Raw Organic Meals in just 10 Minutes Review

Raw Food In Ten Minutes: How to make the best Raw Organic Meals in just 10 Minutes

My partner and I have have tried a handful of recipes in this book and not one took 10 minutes or less. But I get that he's compiled a bunch of recipes that don't require 12 hours in a dehydrator or soaking nuts for 6 hours.
I've found that some of his recipes are heavy on the olive oil, which doesn't sit well with my stomach. He also uses a lot of miso which can make your food rather salty - DO NOT add the salt his recipes call for until the end, then add to taste. It almost seems to me that he doesn't measure when he is prepping his own food and when he put this recipe book together he just kind of guessed what the measurements should be. Many of the different items are texturally the same. Some recipes are heavy on the nuts as well.
This may be a good beginners book but by no means should this book be used as an indicator of what raw food can be...this is not a horrible book, don't expect it to look like a cookbook that you buy off the shelf. It looks almost handmade, with some of the pictures being heavily pixelated. This book does give you a decent foundation of how to start making raw foods and once you get that down you can just use his recipes as a reference. If you do order this book I would suggest going lighter then he suggests on many of his measurements - remember, you can always add more!

SOS The Six O'Clock Scramble to the Rescue: Earth-Friendly, Kid-Pleasing Dinners for Busy Families Review

SOS The Six O'Clock Scramble to the Rescue: Earth-Friendly, Kid-Pleasing Dinners for Busy Families

I have been cooking with Aviva's first Scramble cookbook for two years now and my whole family has enjoyed her recipes.
When I saw she had a new cookbook out, I requested it immediately but was a bit unsure whether it would live up to the first one. I should not have worried - I think this one is even better! There were so many recipes I loved that I have too many pages to dog-ear, and I anticipate this being used weekly in our home for a long time.
Best improvements:
1. Better organization - While still categorized by seasons (which I find extremely helpful), now the fish/meat/pasta recipes are put together so that you can easily select from the right style of meal. At the beginning of each 'season' every recipe is indexed by page number so you can easily flip right to it.
2. Side dish recipes are now included in each recipe, instead of having to flip to the back of the book
3. Very helpful side-bar articles and tips (and very up to date - including the issue of BPA in canned goods, composting tips, and lunch/snack ideas)
4. Really good recipes! There is great variety in here with a focus on lots of fruits/vegetables and interesting spices. Nothing bland or boring.
I highly recommend this cookbook!!!
