Low-Cholesterol Cookbook For Dummies Review

Many of us make resolutions for the New Year. Some we keep and others are hard to stick to. I did not have a choice about lowering my cholesterol. I just didn't know how to go about it. I found myself in the Dummies section of the bookstore, and reached for Molly Siple's book - Low Cholesterol Cookbook for Dummies. I started skimming through it and the recipes sounded delicious and easy. I purchased the book and am eager to share the news that I have lost 4 lbs in two weeks. Not only are the recipes easy to follow, but the ingredients are all available in my local market. No mystery foods. It is astonishing how quick some of the meals are to prepare, and I just love Molly's little tips on what type dish to serve it in and even how to cut up a mango. I am having my cholesterol levels checked in February and will report my success then.

The Indian Slow Cooker: 50 Healthy, Easy, Authentic Recipes Review

The Indian Slow Cooker: 50 Healthy, Easy, Authentic Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been waiting forever for someone to write a wonderful collection of Indian recipes for the slow cooker and my prayers have been answered! Anupy Singla has put together some lovely easy Indian recipes - where all you do is throw a bunch of easy-to-find ingredients in the slow cooker, set it and forget it for several hours! The recipes mainly focus on vegetarian ingredients but there are some lovely meat curries (with notes on how to make many of them vegetarian with soy crumbles or seitan).
The fact that she has figured out how to make kheema (a ground beef and peas comfort-food dish) in the slow cooker (genius!) is worth the price of this book! I can't wait to make every recipe and will probably be making a batch of the "Wet Curry" every week to freeze and use for quick weeknight meals.
Overall, I am thrilled with this book - it will let our family eat delicious and healthy Indian meals more often than we were able to before. Yippee!

This unique guide to preparing Indian food using classic slow-cooker techniques features more than 50 recipes, beautifully illustrated with full-color photography throughout. These great recipes take advantage of the slow cooker's ability to keep food moist through its long cooking cycle, letting readers create dishes with far less oil and saturated fat than in traditional recipes. Anupy Singla shows the busy, harried family that cooking healthy is simple and that cooking Indian is just a matter of understanding a few key spices. Her "Indian Spices 101" chapter introduces readers to the mainstay spices of an Indian kitchen, as well as how to store, prepare, and combine them in different ways. Among her 50 recipes are all the classics — specialties like dal, palak paneer, and gobi aloo — and also dishes like butter chicken, keema, and much more. The result is a terrific introduction to making healthful, flavorful Indian food using the simplicity and convenience of the slow cooker.

Student's Vegetarian Cookbook, Revised: Quick, Easy, Cheap, and Tasty Vegetarian Recipes Review

Student's Vegetarian Cookbook, Revised: Quick, Easy, Cheap, and Tasty Vegetarian Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book over a year ago when my husband & I started eating healthier. We avoid dairy now & most of the recipes that call for milk specify that soy milk can be substituted. (Recipes that call for cheese I automatically sub soy or rice cheese.)
All of the recipes are extremely simple. The ingredients lists are usually very short & the entire book is very practical. If you're learning to cook (or if the idea of heading into a kitchen scares you) this is the book for you.
Here are the sections with some examples of recipes:
Breakfast (french toast, vegan pancakes, scrambled tofu, rice pudding)
Dips & Spreads (salsa-excellent! hummus, guacamole, tahini)
Soups & Stews (miso-happy soup, minestrone, split pea, kale & potato, Moroccan stew)
Salads & Dressings (fruit salad, apple raisin couscous, marinated vegetables, avocado & pear salad)
Sandwiches, wraps & pizza (falafel, crostini with a bean & a green, black bean & yam quesadilla, tacos monterey, pita pizza crust, farmhouse vegetable pizza)
Bean meals (chipotle black bean chili, dal, marinated tempeh)
Grain meals (spontaneous couscous, polenta with black beans, Indian rice, Sicilian rice)
Pasta (with zucchini & basil, with green beans & feta, primavera, spaghetti pancake, peanut pasta)
Vegetables, Stir frys & potatoes (artichoke feast, gingered Chinese green stir fry, Pad Thai, colcannon, scalloped potatoes vegan style)
Desserts & quick breads (dark chocolate pudding, baked apples, baked bananas, banana bread)
There's also a section on coffee drinks-like cafe au lait.

The New York Times 60-Minute Gourmet Review

The New York Times 60-Minute Gourmet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Really, you just can't go wrong. There are no 'vanity' recipes in here (you know the ones, with 87 ingredients and impossible-to-find spices), only simple and flawless dishes that have been proven over time to be winners. I first got this book on the recommendation of a professional chef, and was very suspicious that it would be completely beyond my meager abilities. I was pleased to discover that everything about this book is straightforward, and no matter what your cooking level is you CAN make EVERY SINGLE RECIPE even if you are a cooking novice. It's a little heavy on the cream in some recipes, so I recommend more for special occasions and weekends than every day cooking - although there are quite a few healthier recipes in there as well.
Favorite recipes? Chicken Scarpariello (took me all of 25 minutes, start to finish), Shell Steak in Vinager & Cream sauce (will impress big-time).

A Master Chef's Signature BookAvailable in paperback for the first time in a decade, The New York Times 60-Minute Gourmet is the bestselling cookbook that catapulted Pierre Franey into the front ranks of American chefs. After a successful career as a restaurant chef, Franey became a food writer for The New York Times in 1975, accepting the challenge to write a regular column featuring recipes that would take less than an hour to prepare. Through his column and the cookbooks that soon followed, Franey created a national sensation with his revolutionary style of cooking, and American kitchens haven't been the same since. The presentation of quick, healthy, and enjoyable meals was a revelation, introducing the home cook to choices beyond spending hours in the kitchen or settling for "fast food." This cookbook -- the first that collected his New York Times recipes -- captures all that was great about Pierre Franey's cooking: fresh, flavorful, low-fat ingredients, ease of preparation, and the injunction "Don't spend all evening in the kitchen!" As a step-by-step guide to better cooking and delicious eating, this great cookbook allows all cooks to employ Pierre Franey's signature methods and create memorable meals in their own homes.

Real Fast Indian Food: More Than 100 Simple, Delicious Recipes You Can Cook in Minutes Review

Real Fast Indian Food: More Than 100 Simple, Delicious Recipes You Can Cook in Minutes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Positives: The recipes are very descriptively named, so one can
really get seduced into trying out a recipe! No extra-long list of ingredients.
She introduces common ingredients found in the american markets, that are not usually used in Indian cooking to create some interesting combinations.Ex: Brocolli and Red pepper raita,
Tuna burgers,Dill rice , Salmon in creamy sauce etc.
There is a section for microwave cooking.Lots of salads and veggie dishes that are totally new to indian food lovers are in here..
Drawback: Absolutely no pictures..so first time cooks and new Indian cooks, might not be happy.
It isn't fast cooking..but its cooking that's well worth the time. Preparing curry sauces beforehand is what makes her concept of cooking "fast" work.
However, I like to create a smaller version of her sauces and use it immediately. The madras curry sauce is great..makes your food look and taste like those served at the Indian restaurants..

Anyone with even a moderately-stocked pantry will be able to flip this book open and find a new way of using standard ingredients. While some recipes are already pretty much second nature to most cooks (i.e., breaded pork cutlets) it does feature some unique, creative twists to old favorites. This is a great handbook for anyone from a beginning chef to a budget-conscious gourmet. This book includes sections for bread, breakfast, appetizers (a great section!), poultry, beef, pork, vegetarian, side dishes, and dessert. Each is labeled with an approximate cost. Each cost seems reasonable to the products--as always, buying in bulk, on sale, etc. will help stay under budget.
A great cookbook to have in any budget-conscious chef's arsenal!

The Simpler the Better: Sensational One-Dish Meals

I've been thrilled with this cookbook. I'm ordering several more copies to give to friends who enjoy food. The dishes come together quickly (making them great for weeknight cooking) and are loaded with flavor. They're also classy enough for company. (BTW, the cover dish really looks that good that when *you* make it!) The skills needed are basic (at least for someone who's handy in the kitchen) and the directions are clear. I heartily recommend it. Some favorites: saffron risotto with shrimp (cover), white bean and tuna salad, turkey chili with polenta, red bell pepper and pork tenderloin saute.

Fast, delightful meals for every day or special occasions
Busy schedules and family demands can make it challenging to create quick, easy–and, at the same time, delicious–meals at home. This one-pot meal cookbook, which features over 125 short, scrumptious recipes, is all about convenience, taste, and presentation with minimum effort and maximum flavor. Leslie Revsin includes elegant yet unfussy dishes–Spaghetti with Pesto and Grape Tomatoes; Spanish Chicken and Garbanzo Stew; Chicken, Basil, and Peanut Stir-Fry; Roast Jerk Pork with Yams and Watercress; Sliced Steak, Baby Spinach, and Roquefort Salad; and Quick Ham Cassoulet, to name a few–that can be made from readily available supermarket ingredients and are simple in terms of the number of ingredients (no more than ten), number of steps (no more than three), and preparation time. And like every other book in The Simpler The Better series, One-Pot Meals includes quick tips, variations, and clever ideas for serving and dressing up dishes.

This is the book on Chinese cooking that I have been looking for. All the dishes you love to eat in the restrauants, and for take out. Wonderful for those of us with no take out worthy of eating. Easy and flavorfull. The cover recipe is delicious... Kung Pao Chicken. Mongolian Beef is divine, but you need to double or triple the sauce. Lemmon Chicken is easy and fantastic as is the Shrimp with Zucchini and Sweet Red Peppers. They are all here..Orange beef, Pepper Steak, Chicken with Cashews, Moo Goo gai Pan, Pot stickers, Mu Shu Pork, and all are tasty and easy to make in an American kitchen. No pretenses to be authentic. Just extremely good American Chinese.... Like P.F.Chang's... I can't reccomend it highly enough.

Average Reviews:

I bought this book imagining how much easier and heathier meal planning could be. What I discovered, after spending $120 for the first week of menus, was that this is not for me. I spent 1.5 hours in the kitchen on the first night of cooking! I am a very busy, working mom. I do not have that much time to spend on preparation, nor the money to spend over $100 per week on food items that I only use a portion of then throw away! I need a meal plan that re-uses leftovers (i.e., most of the english muffins in a bag instead of just one) and is more time/cost conscientious. Hopefully, I will have better luck with my next purchase!

Favorite Japanese Dishes (Quick & Easy) Review

Favorite Japanese Dishes (Quick and Easy)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Favorite Japanese Dishes" is the second "Quick and Easy" cookbook that I have bought, and I remain impressed with the series. There is a good variety of dishes, and very simple instructions for cooking.
This one focuses on five fundamental styles of Japanese cooking, basically what a Japanese family would eat at home on a day-to-day basis. Shabu-shabu are generally meat dishes cooked in a metal hot pot, Sukiyaki is both meat and seafood cooked in either a metal or a ceramic nabe pot. Tempura is battered and fried...well anything, really. Teppan-yaki is thin slices of meat and vegetables cooked on a metal hot plate. Teriyaki is a slow style of cooking fish and meats that produces a distinctive taste.
Shabu-shabu, Sukiyaki and Teppan-yaki are all very social means of cooking, where everyone sits around a bubbling pot or hot plate and cooks their own meal at a table. They are really great ways to have a dinner party, even better in the winter when you can huddle around a hot dish.
Each style has a good sample of different ingredients using the same method. There is typically a beef dish, a pork dish, a chicken dish and a seafood dish. While I haven't tried everything, the Seafood sukiyaki is amazing, as is the salmon teriyaki.
"Favorite Japanese Dishes" is probably not a very good cookbook for vegetarians, as almost all of the dishes have meat or seafood of some sort. The exception is tempura, which can be cooked with pretty much anything.

It contains not only description of ingredients, preparation and instructions but also 600 illustrations, to support the step-by-step processes. One can safely say that this is the very book that embodies the motto "Quick & Easy."

The Food Nanny Rescues Dinner: Easy Family Meals for Every Day of the Week Review

The Food Nanny Rescues Dinner: Easy Family Meals for Every Day of the Week
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I feed 6-7 people every day for dinner, sometimes more if one or two of my kids' friends are over. I think about food all day even when it's not meal time because I'm thinking about what to put together to make a cohesive meal, if I laid it out to thaw, if I have enough of it, if I have any leftovers that I can incorporate so as not to waste food. It is exhausting. I purchase absolutely any cookbook there is that will help me make meal planning, prep and cooking easier. So when I saw this book I had to have it.
The very first page was planning the weekly menu like I've been trying to do for years. This book is having Comfort Food on Monday, Italian on Tuesday, Fish & Meatless on Wednesday, Mexican Night on Thursday, Pizza Friday's, Grill Night on Saturday and Family Traditions on Sunday. I've been doing something similar but trying to make mine Meatless Monday's, [...]. But regardless of what you pick this is excellent meal planning advice. It gives yourself (and the kids and spouse) an idea of what to look forward to rather than coming home with pots and pans banging around with no idea of what to prepare.
That is what I liked about the Sandi Richard book too, The Family Dinner Fix: Cooking for the Rushed. She has similar ideas to Ms. Edmunds. I would use a calendar that you get free in the mail and write your "theme" across the top. Your themes might be different than the suggested themes in this book but either way come up with 7 themes and write them across the top of the calendar.
Now go to each chapter in this cookbook (or any other cookbook) and list a recipe that corresponds to that theme. List the page it is on and briefly write any side dishes that you would be serving with the main entree. Ms. Edmunds suggests making your menu first and then your grocery list second. I believe in making the grocery list first and then making meals from that. I try to buy what's on sale and then make meals from the sale foods rather than the other way around.
I made the white chicken chili that was listed under the Comfort Food section. It's intended to be a Monday meal but I think we had it on a Wednesday (oops!). LOL. It was very good. Also under each recipe is a conversation starter. It's a question you're to pose to the family around the dinner table to stimulate conversation. I actually purchased these from www.savingdinner.com and here they are free.
There are also bread recipes, side dishes, desserts, after school snacks, cooking tips, and other great ideas to get the family back to the dinner table. It's an awesome book. One of my better purchases. This is certainly a fantastic gift, wedding or otherwise. It would be a great gift for someone just starting to cook who needs ideas and instruction for getting a complete meal on the table.
Another good cookbook I like is Saving Dinner: The Menus, Recipes, and Shopping Lists to Bring Your Family Back to the Table by Leann Ely. It has shopping lists, menus, and great recipes to get started. It's not laid out with "theme" nights like the Food Nanny but it's good nevertheless.

Everyday Indian: 100 Fast, Fresh and Healthy Recipes Review

Everyday Indian: 100 Fast, Fresh and Healthy Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have only had the opportunity to make a half-dozen of the dishes. But every one of these has been delicious.
Some real favorites in there: My Mother's Chickpeas, Cherry Tomato & Paneer Salad, Tandoori Quesadillas, Bal's No-Butter Chicken.
Several things stand out.
1) Beautiful photography of the dishes.
2) Entertaining narrative for each dish. I felt like I know the author after just reading a couple of recipes. Very, very warm and personal.
3) Focuses on fast - fresh - and healthy... just as the subtitle says. She got me on the grapeseed & flaxseed oil kick when I cook.
One note. You should take the time to prepare her masalas and various spice blends as it will help prepare some of the dishes.
One small criticism. Give me a list of all of the recipes that use a given masala.
Still give it a 5 star. Please note the 3 star of another reviewer was a criticism that the book was not cut correctly. Not really a reflection on the content of this book and hardly the author's fault.

I've made Charleston Chicken Pecan Salad, Nutty Pumpkin Lasagna, Texas Chile Meatloaf, Broiled Margharita Chicken, Pork Roast with Apple Chutney, Jambalaya, Fruit Crisp, and others, and not one of them took more than fifteen minutes to put together! It's great that you can sit back and let a delicious dinner take care of itself, but the best part is that it goes together so quickly, thanks to the use of pre-cut, pre-skinned, pre-chopped and otherwise prepared recipe items. The hands-on part is as easy as the hands-off part!

Make Ahead Meals for Busy Moms Review

Make Ahead Meals for Busy Moms
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Perhaps "Don't Panic, dinners in the freezer" would be a better selection. This book is a misnomer- it doesn't help you plan ahead for more than 24 hours. Anyone can figure out to do their prep work in advance then store the food in the fridge. Other negative aspects
1. no photos
2. recipes include things like "Cheese Whiz"
3. directions are for one meal at a time, (to save time- I like to make more than one meal)
4. very large type (could be a plus for some people- it make me dizzy)
5. baking instructions are for odd sized pans
I will donate this book to the library- not worth the shelf space.
