Weeknight Grilling with the BBQ Queens: Making Meals Fast and Fabulous Review

Weeknight Grilling with the BBQ Queens: Making Meals Fast and Fabulous

I saw the BBQ Queens on television, showing how I can grill once and eat twice and let the grocery store help me out with salad bar ingredients (save me the chopping and slicing and dicing). With three kids and a husband, that's just what I wanted to hear, so I bought the book and put it to the test. It has really changed the way I shop and cook! The kids eat their vegetables, now that the veggies are grilled, and we've never eaten better! Now, my husband grills one of their dinners on Sunday, and we have a "deja vu" dinner on Monday from the leftovers. Then I grill on Tuesday or Wednesday, and we have a second meal for another night. My favorite recipe so far is the lime and basil shrimp with grilled asparagus and polenta, and then we use leftover grilled shrimp (and polenta cut into croutons) for the blackeyed pea salad with bacon. I can truly say that we're living the good food life because of this book.

Handymom's Guide to Grilling: The Fast, Easy Way to Smokin' Meals Review

Handymom's Guide to Grilling: The Fast, Easy Way to Smokin' Meals

Wow! It's about time someone came out with a cookbook like this! One recipe per page in large print - good for those of us requiring reading glasses more and more. The pages are so pleasing to look at - uncluttered with very helpful, colorful banners that tell you if the recipe is a) something you will grill, b)one you will use what you grilled for leftovers or c) a side dish to complement any entree. Different, simple, really delicious recipes like Rice-a-roni salad and Asian lettuce wraps using your leftover grilled chicken - yes! The author, Catherine Mayhew, also introduces one to the realm of grilling in a "gentle" way, making this reader hopeful she can learn to grill as well as her husband (even better! Shhh...). The author seems to really know her stuff, plus she's a mom, so understands that most of us do not have all day to prepare meals. A definite cookbook to have in one's arsenal.

The Gas Grill Gourmet: Great Grilled Food for Everyday Meals and Fantastic Feasts Review

The Gas Grill Gourmet: Great Grilled Food for Everyday Meals and Fantastic Feasts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is by far the most frequently used cookbook that I have purchased in the past year...and I buy lots of cookbooks! We bought a Weber Genesis gas grill this year, after being hardcore charcoal grillers for years. I was looking for a versatile, informative, and all-inclusive book of gas grill recipes, and I found it in this one. It starts with good info about gas grill methods, the difference between direct-heat and indirect-heat grilling, cooking times and accessories, written in a reader-friendly manner. And the recipes....wow! This book has everything from appetizers (try the Cheese Quesadillas...my guests inhaled these so fast I didn't see how they'd have room for the main course) through desserts, with tons of great side dish recipes. And as for the meat section, which is why most of us buy grill cookbooks, think of any meat, poultry or fish you could possibly want to grill, and this book will give you a great recipe for it. The chicken section alone, which is what I find we use most, covers whole roasted chickens several ways, various marinated chicken recipes, wings...and try the Pesto Chicken Breasts, they are out of this world! There is also a section of "Off the Grill" side dishes, with lots of great, summery recipes for salads and vegetables (the Creamed Spinach was fantastic).
I also purchased other grill books, but found that the recipes were, for the most part, difficult and too "high-brow" for casual home cooking and weekend entertaining. This book does cover the more elegant dishes (Quail? Who grills quail?), and there are plenty of recipes with ethnic flavor that will inspire you, but it's main focus is on simpler recipes that won't send you scurrying to the gourmet section of the supermarket for ingredients.
If you don't agree this is the most useful grill cookbook on the market....your next steak is on me.

Lipsmackin' Backpackin': Lightweight Trail-tested Recipes for Backcountry Trips Review

Lipsmackin' Backpackin': Lightweight Trail-tested Recipes for Backcountry Trips
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We have 8 backpacking cookbooks including both of Christine's books. Lipsmackin' Backpackin' is by far our most used book in our kitchen. The recipes are easy to follow, use easy to obtain foodstuffs, are tasty, quick to prepare, and are even great out car camping where storage space is still at a premium in our little VW campmobile or for a quick busy nite at home dinner.
We bought this book in 2000 just before a 50 mile rim to rim extended hike in the Grand Canyon. Most of our older books dating back to the early 70's called out items that were hard to find early on and next to nonexistent now days. Freeze dried meals may be light but are expensive to use for the number of nites we spend out on the trail every year. Not to add 1 meal isn't enough and 1 for each of us is way too much, meaning that we have always had to repack 3 freeze dried meals into 2 meals or add extra ingredients to bulk them out. Rice mixes and couscous get old.
The recipes in Lipsmackin' Backpackin' were so yummy sounding that we packed a weeks worth of them into the Grand Canyon, without even trying them at home first. Every one of the recipes we tried has been a keeper. Except for a few recipes of our own that we have come up with over the years, or a few favorites, we have hardly used our other books since. It is our gift of choice for Christmas, wedding and birthday presents.
We are the backpacking coordinators for a local hiking club and the first thing we recommend to beginners trying to think of something to eat when backpacking, is to buy this book.
Note that while Christine makes good use of a dehydrator, we have found that preparedness stores carry a wide variety of dehydrated or freeze dried vegies, fruit, or meats to buy in bulk (even peanut butter powder and the ever elusive sour cream powder) so it is possible to produce many of the meals with a well stocked backpack foods pantry. On the other hand, we didn't buy our two dehydrators just to make apple rings with. With a little planning and a spring weekend of assembly line packing each year, we have a whole seasons worth of meals packed and ready to go down in our basement. Then all we have to do is make our minds up on which meals to take when we pack our packs. Cooking our meals usually does not take any longer than it takes our friends to cook what ever red or white glop they are making. Plus we can control portions so much easier and rarely have leftovers to pack out.

Weber's Real Grilling: Over 200 Original Recipes Review

Weber's Real Grilling: Over 200 Original Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A few years ago, I was given Weber's Big Book of Grilling, and it proved to be a real eye opener into the quality of foods prepared by grilling. Many seem to think that grilling means burning food on an open fire, but this concept could not be further from the truth. The "Big Book" is a comprehensive study of the hows, whys and details of all aspects of grilling. As a result of having and using it, I am frequently asked to cook for friends and neighbors.
Now Weber has issued this book, which is another exceptional exercise in fantastic food preparation. It contains over 200 recipes that are simple and clearly detailed. It contains detailed information on rubs, marinades and sauces. It has step bt step photos of difficult steps like de-boning a leg of lamb, or trussing a chicken, and it has photos on the final appearance of each of the recipied dishes. The instructions could not be easier to follow.
When used in conjunction with the "Big Book", The grilling chef should be able to present a continuous stream of rich, intensely flavorful meals without a glitch. I cannot praise these two efforts enough.
Whether you are an experienced cook, or are considering entering this very rewarding activity, you simply cannot go wrong with this book and its predecessor. You might as well order both at the same time, because if you get this book, you WILL get the other.
Addendum: Since reviewing this fine book. I have become aware of a companion website. It is www.realgrilling.com, and it is a really neat place. Author Jamie Purviance has a series of slide shows with voice accompanyment on cooking techniques and promises to expand them, as well as to add recipes there. I have never seen this approach to supplementing a book with a website, but Jamie's site is really good, and looks to get better. It is not referenced in the book, but folks who get and enjoy the book can add to that enjoyment by going to the website.
Nicely done!!
