Lauri's Low-Carb Cookbook: Rapid Weight Loss with Satisfying Meals (2nd Edition) Review

Lauri's Low-Carb Cookbook: Rapid Weight Loss with Satisfying Meals (2nd Edition)

Without going into too many details, let me just say that THIS COOKBOOK is the only reason my wife and I are still on the Atkins diet. We bought four cookbooks (all highly recommended), only to find that, while providing tasty recipes, three of the cookbooks asked for all manner of "fancy" ingredients. Stuff not normally found in our "average" kitchen. Expensive stuff. And many of the recipes weren't quite as low-carb as we had hoped (20g for one serving?).
Lauri's cookbook took care of those problems. I think the only "fancy" ingredients we had problems with were Kitchen Bouquet (it was in the gravy section at the store) and shallots (never had one before). The rest is just plain, everyday ingredients. And low-carb? All of her recipes list the nutritional information right there. It's nice to eat a large, tasty dinner with only 2.3g per serving! Most of the recipes are below 10g, and many are below 5g. Serving size is very generous.
I consider this book to be the best diet/way-of-eating investment I've made so far. This cookbook is just too good to pass up.

Was excited to see that there was a new book out by Dana. Wondered why I hadn't heard about it on her web site, so I emailed her asking about it. (No response)
So then I find out, after having paid for it, that this is a compilation of several of her previous low carb books, all of which I already own. If you already have her other Low Carb books, don't buy this one. If you want to dip your toe into Dana Carpender's low carb cookbooks and don't own any of them, then this would be a good place to start. You can sample recipes from many of her books this way, and if you like what you try then you can spend the money on the other books to get a more comprehensive collection.

Low-Carb Meals in Minutes Review

Low-Carb Meals in Minutes
Average Reviews:

When I read the first review, of this book posted here, I thought, this person doesn't get it. Linda Gassenheimer has created a very smart collection of recipes which she groups in three stages of a low-carb diet. The recipes in LOW-CARB MEALS IN MINUES are based on three separate 14-day menu plans for beginning, middle and advance low-carb lifestyles. Each recipe in the menu is part of a particular 14-day plan so that all fat intake is planned. You may get an individual recipe that seems to have more fat than it should, but Gassenheimer has compensated by offering recipes with less fat for breakfast or dinner. Most recipes found in such books as The Zone, Sugar Busters and Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution, are not very appetizing. This books is the exception.
I'm a cook so I want to good food and Ms. Gassenheimer, a Cordon-Bleu trained teacher, host of her own NPR food show and James Beard Award-winning author of DINNER IN MINUTES (based on her syndicated column) offers delicious, easy, quick and healthy recipes that the low-carb dieter can live with. Ever try to buy breakfast in a coffeshop or a take-out? Most breakfast items are loaded with carbs--bagels, danish, cereals, bread, french toast, pancakes, waffles, hash brown potatoes--you name it--loaded with carbs. Gassenheimer takes the guess work out of this difficult to organize meal. There are even desserts to enjoy.
Some of my favorite whole meal recipes menus include: shrimp caesar with pears and yogurt, mussels mariniere with mesclun salad, pesto chicken with steamed artichokes and fresh figs, nuevo tex-mex layered salad, pecan ham roll-ups with cinnamon oatmeal, sirloin burger with fresh slaw, asian ginger salmon with sesame broccoli and yellow bean salad, sunny-side up swiss melt, and grilled potobello and canadian bacon omelette.
This is the recipe book us low-carb addicts have been waiting for.

Extreme Lo-Carb Meals On The Go: Fast And Fabulous Solutions To Get You Through The Day Review

Extreme Lo-Carb Meals On The Go: Fast And Fabulous Solutions To Get You Through The Day
Average Reviews:

Those who gave this a good review must not have tried any of the recipes.
The book title says extreme lo-carb meals on the go. It is none of these things.
A lot of the recipes contain low carb breads, pastas and tortillas which is fine if you have no weight to lose.
The book promises fast recipes but tells you in the introduction that to the author fast means that the recipes can be cooked in less than an hour. Many of the recipes require that you prep ingredients in advance, the author calls "make ahead".
Many of the recipes call for expensive, hard to find substitutions for sugar, wheat, and syrups.
The only good recipes in the book, which were few and far between, I already had from free, online, low carb sites. (I saw two recipes out of the whole book that I would try and already had seen them online.)
A huge disappointment and I was very excited by the reveiws given so I thought this would be a good resource for me.
Save your money. Search online for the same recipes without the expensive ingredient substitutes.

500 Low Glycemic Index Recipes: Fight Diabetes and Heart Disease, Lose Weight and Have Optimum Energy with Recipes That Let You Eat the Foods You Enjoy

I have blood sugar problems and, I suspect, pre-diatbes. I had the hardest time finding cookbooks that had a big section on ideas for just vegetables! I wanted to add more interesting veggie side dishes into my meal plans but even the vegetarian books I looked at just didn't have what I wanted. This book does - and a whole lot more. Lots of stews and soups and skillet meals. Most of them can be served either plain (such as a soup or stew) or over rice or noodles. The nice thing is that most of the recipes don't incorporate many carbs, therefore making them low-glycemic, which is great for anyone who struggles with diabetes, pre-diabetes, hypoglycemia (which is my issue) or any other problems with erratic or unstable blood glucose levels. I have tried MANY of the recipes and found them all to be "keepers". I do love that I can make some kind of meal that can be served over rice and give it to my family that way and serve it to myself without rice. You won't be disappointed in this book. The only thing I can say in a negative way is that the author is very much into a "no sodium" way of thinking so everything is listed as "salt-free" and he never adds salt to any recipe. I add salt to all of them and find the flavor enhanced even more. Check out this book! I use mine several times a week and will continue to for years to come.

I had this pre-ordered here at Amazon but found it this past weekend at a bookstore and it was worth paying the difference and having it rather then waiting for it to ship. I love all of Dana's books, but by far this is my favorite. I wasn't sure what to think because of the title saying every calorie counts instead of "low carb" but it is a low carb cookbook, just better for OWL and maintenance, BUT, most everything in this book is 13g carb per serving and less (a lot between 4-8), even dishes with rice and whole wheat flour. She mixes cauli-rice with wild rice and almond flour (meal) with whole wheat flour to keep carb counts low while giving us those grains we can add back once off induction. This is a book perfrect for low carbers and for those watching carbs and calories alike. But its the recipes that earn it 5 stars. Peachy rice (8g per serving) and tandoor chicken is what I made last night and they were delicious (and everything on my plate was 12g carb total). 3 meals like that keep me under my 40 grams daily cab allowance, and yet I enjoyed real rice last night. I'm so happy to have this book. I know it is about to become the most used cookbook because everything appeals to my taste buds. Dana never disappoints us and this one is no exception. Low carbers, don't be fooled by the title, it is low carb. Maybe not low enough carb for induction, but perfect for the later stages of weight loss.
Thank you Dana!!!! And thank you for thinking of all of us who watch what we eat. Its so nice to have all these options for OWL. More recipes for those of us past induction, almost to goal weight or maintaining is always appreciated, especially for those of us who have had to count calories too. This is something not many low carb cookbook authors address and I'm so glad she did. Keep the cookbooks coming Dana!
Oops, it says 4 stars but I gave it 5! I would give it 10 if I could!
