Better Homes and Gardens: 5-ingredient Meals-234 Quick and Easy Recipes
Average Reviews:

I wouldn't exactly call this a cookbook, it's more like a thicker magazine, but this is by far my favorite cook"book". I have tried most of the recipes and have yet to be disappointed. I am a new wife trying to learn to cook and wow my husband with these recipes. They also include nutrition information with every recipe with I love. I will be buying more of these books and giving them to my newly married friends. This is great in-between book, a little nicer than the quick 5 minute/5 ingredient meals, but still very simple. Most nights I come home from work and just flip through until i find something that looks good for dinner. Within 30 minutes, I 've prepared a full, healthy meal.

Casseroles are the answer to the busy cook who wants to put a home-baked meal on the table, but most recipes focus on condensed soup and tuna from the can - so try something new with a new concept in casseroles in Complete Idiot's Guide To Cover And Bake Meals, covering everything from Lemongrass Chicken Curry with Linguine, Coconut and Bean Sprouts to Caribbean Braised Ribs with Mango, Pineapple and Rice, or Sole Almandine with Vegetable and Rice Stuffing. No color photos, but despite the lack of canned ingredients in most dishes, the easy instructions don't need them.

Shortcut Mediterranean: Easy And Flavorful Meals in 30 Minutes or Less Review

Shortcut Mediterranean: Easy And Flavorful Meals in 30 Minutes or Less
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book starts with an overview of Spanish, French and Italian cuisines. The next section lists ingredients to keep stocked in the kitchen so you can be prepared to cook good meals after a busy day. Next is tips for shopping and saving time and also some suggestions for where to avoid trying to cut corners. The author includes menu ideas for entertaining, listed by season, which really helps me as I like to use fresh local ingredients as much as possible. Recipes are for four people but it would be simple to double them. The instructions are easy to follow and all of the recipes I've tried so far (Gaspacho, Insalata Tricolore, Fettucini with Pesto, Grilled Salmon with Avocado Salsa, Stuffed Mushrooms) were really good.
The notes in the recipes and the notes at the beginning of each chapter include helpful tips that you might not know (like to not overdrain your pasta).
This book is a gem. I can't wait for the weather to get a little cooler so I can try some of the fall and winter recipes.

The Soccer Moms' Cookbook: Healthy Meals and Snacks for Active Kids
Average Reviews:

This cookbook is great. I have made a lot of these recipes and my family loves them! A lot of these types of cookbooks call for strange ingredients that are hard to find, or things I wouldn't eat...much less expect my kids to eat. These recipes are fast, easy, and good for you. There are also easy snacks for before and after games and practices. My family's favorites are the smoothies, banana bread, and the "Rookies Pumpkin Oatmeal Cookies." She also talks about the importance of good nutrition and how it effected the U.S. National team while in China. Great Book! It is a must for parents with active kids!

Student's Go Vegan Cookbook: Over 135 Quick, Easy, Cheap, and Tasty Vegan Recipes Review

Student's Go Vegan Cookbook: Over 135 Quick, Easy, Cheap, and Tasty Vegan Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book right when it first came out entirely upon the strength of Carole Raymond's other cookbook, the "Student's Vegetarian Cookbook," which I would describe as the perfect cookbook for people who can't cook. I was expecting more of the same easy, cheap, quick, and great tasting recipes I had found there. Unfortunately, the "Student's Go Vegan Cookbook" is a disappointment on every single one of those attributes. The recipes found here are more complicated, more expensive, more time consuming, and just less useful than the ones in the previous book.
Now, don't get me wrong, there are some hidden gems in this book as well, but that just it: they're hidden! Time and time again I find myself hungry and flipping through this book saying to myself: "nope... nope... nope..." because everything I see isn't a meal, it's just part of a meal. If you filter out the endless array of salads, dips, dressings, toppings, and side dishes you are left with a scant few actual meals. I'm an active (mostly) vegan male, and need hearty and healthy food to keep me running, not salads and side dishes! The idea seems to be that the author is giving you all the building blocks so you can go and create your own meal. All I can say is that's what people who can cook do... and if I could do that I wouldn't need this book in the first place!
I have no idea why Carole Raymond decided to organize the book like this. I don't have time to cook all day and combine 6 recipes into one full meal - that's why I bought this book. The great thing about the Student's Vegetarian Cookbook is that almost every page seems to have a complete meal on it, and the same thing just can't be said about the Vegan version. As a warning, I also find the book to be very heavy on Tempeh and Tofu recipes. I personally cannot stand Tempeh and don't like to eat tofu every day, so that also discounts a large number of recipes for me.
In considering this book, one does need to realize the reality that cooking vegan is harder then cooking vegetarian... but I don't think it has to be THIS hard. I think Carole Raymond needs to re-evaluate exactly who her target audience is here. I generally like Raymond's recipes, and I'd love to see a stripped down version of this book, with a renewed focus on quick, easy, complete meals. As things stand, there are some great recipes in this book... but I just don't find it all that useful.

Small Parties: More than 100 Recipes for Intimate Gatherings
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I LOVE this book! I had a small party last night and made dishes exclusively from "Small Parties". It was a huge hit! I made the baby potatoes w/crab meat stuffing appetizer, tortellini in asparagus gorgonzola cream sauce, chicken under a brick w/garlic caper sauce and the wild mushroom, sage and red wine risotto with the coconut-dusted white chocolate strawberries and berry napoleans for dessert. Everything was delicious! Biggest accomplishment- even the kids enjoyed each dish, especially the coconut dusted strawberries eating all of them. I'd never cooked with a brick before (chicken under a brick w/garlic caper sauce), it worked beautifully! I throw parties often and I'll use this book again and again.

This is very well written and organized book, written primarily for consumers, rather than professionals (who still will benefit, as I did). They have a knack for distilling things down to what is important to understand, as well as what to do.
Professionals and consumers alike will appreciate the Resource section in the Appendix. Many specific books and websites are recommended and nicely organized.

Joie Warner's Take a Tin of Tuna: 65 Inspired Recipes for Every Meal of the Day Review

Joie Warner's Take a Tin of Tuna: 65 Inspired Recipes for Every Meal of the Day
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been collecting Joie's cookbooks for several years now. I have more than 200 cookbooks in my library, but hers are among my absolute favorites. I cook from her pizza, chicken and muffin books all the time. And I think her `no-cook pasta sauces' cookbook is brilliant.
I recently bought Joie's Take a Tin of Tuna and like her other cookbooks, her recipes are simple to prepare, always turn out perfectly and taste wonderful. The book has lots of pretty pictures of yummy-looking soups, sandwiches, appetizers, and main dishes. I never knew there were so many ways to prepare tuna and how sophisticated this food item could be.
Now I'm cooking from her new tuna book and so far these are my favs,
1) tuna and sweet corn chowder--my husband and kids loved it!
2) tuna tapanade--friends dropped by and I made this instant tuna spread with ingredients I had in my cupboard.
3) tuna, lemon and caper crostini-- elegant and easy with great "wow" factor.
4) deep-fried tuna wontons--sounded weird, tried it, tasted fab.
5) tuna and bacon stuffed baked potatoes-- pure comfort food.
6) curried tuna and chutney salad with mango--awsome tuna salad.
7) tuna reuben sandwich--I think I like it better than the original with corned beef!
8) grilled eggplant, tuna and roasted red pepper panini--totally awesome sandwich.
9) classy tuna noodle casserole--simply fab. I served it to guests and they all wanted the recipe.
10) extra lemony tuna risotto--so good and easy I've made it 6 times already.
I can't wait to try the broccoli, cheddar and tuna chowder and the tuna stuffed red peppers.
My only tiny complaint is that in some of her recipes using olive oil, she discards the oil in the can instead of using it as part of the ingredients. I am quite a frugal person and I've recently discovered that I actually like the tuna flavored oil. So why not use it?

I did not understand Mr. Marold's tirade about dried parsley and basil. What I really love about this author's recipes is her bounteous use of fresh basil, parsley and chives.
I've read the book cover to cover and there isn't one recipe with dried parsley. And only one recipe--her tuna creole--uses dried basil, which FYI is traditional in Cajun and Creole food. (I know, cause I lived in Louisiana for ten years).Cajuns use lots of dried spices and herbs including dried basil--even garlic powder, as does my favorite Cajun cookbook by Chef Paul Prudhomme.
I give this book five stars. The first for offering truly inspired recipes for such a common ingredient. The second for originality (not the same old run-of-the-mill recipes) and practicality (these recipes I'll actually use). The third is for providing amazing canned tuna recipes that are actually good enough to serve to company. The fourth is for her helpful tuna tips and list of pantry items. I took the author's advice and now use tuna in olive oil, not the bland stuff in water I've been eating since childhood. The fifth star is for explaining that in places like Italy and Spain canned tuna is actually a `gourmet' item. Good news for canned tuna lovers. Finally we can come out of the closet!!!
Although there are only 65 recipes in this book, I judge a cookbook by the quality, not the quantity of recipes. Plus I love cookbooks with pictures of the finished dish, so I'll gladly pay a little extra. THIS BOOK IS WORTH EVERY PENNY! Thank you Joie Warner.

Quick ; Easy Diabetic Menus Review

Quick ; Easy Diabetic Menus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I rated this one five stars based on what I look for in diabetic/low-carb cookbooks (1) has to have complete nutritional information (I don't like just "exchanges" or just a carbohydrate range or just sugarfree...); (2) recipes I will make (a favorite is the Guiltless Brownies with cocoa and bananas) that my family won't bypass or that require too many shopping trips to specialty stores; and (3) variety (I don't need another book telling me a crustless pie with sugarfree pudding or tying to just substitute a sweetener for sugar) -- this one has a variety of menus, lots of different dishes, real food ingredients and a wide range of carbohydrate counts instead of assuming all diabetics are using certain ranges or exchanges or avoiding the same foods. Realistic menus.

There are some - too many - very tasteless recipes in this book. It also has a few too many recipes that have fruits that some people cant tolerate on this anti yeast diet. I asked someone who already had this book to tell me the recipes that she thought were good, and she only named 5 or 6. I recommend signing this book out from your local library if possible and trying recipes or looking for ones that may appeal to you instead of spending money on the book.

I love this cookbook! It's the first book I got where I actually read the ingredients and the directions and felt that I could actually do them. Granted, what they say takes 15minutes, is really more than 15mins unless you're Rachael Ray or something. Also, not all recipes are only 5 ingredients. It'll teach you to make a sauce that needs an 'X' amount of ingredients, then, count that whole sauce as 1 ingredient for the main dish. I think it's cheating, but overall, I still love the book and I can fool people into thinking that I actually know how to cook!
