Foundation: Redefine Your Core, Conquer Back Pain, and Move with Confidence Review

Foundation: Redefine Your Core, Conquer Back Pain, and Move with Confidence
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have read both "Foundation" and "Eight Steps to a Pain Free Back" in great detail and thought I would give it a try to compare them from my perspective. Let's start with the simple: both books are well written, beautifully illustrated (both on high quality paper) and careful about providing the reader good information. Broadly speaking, the main difference between the two books for me is that Foundation seems more directed (though not exclusively) at athletes, people that are already in pretty darn good shape. I would say that again, in general, the exercise regime recommended Foundation requires a relatively significant level of conditioning. The pictures throughout the book bear that out: everyone looks very buff and no one appears to be much older than 40. OK, make that 30! I think the Gokhale Method is directed toward people that are athletic but also those that are not in great physical shape...old, young, really all ages. You can see that in the pictures in the book...short, tall, heavy, old, babies. I think this because the Gokhale Method involves smaller, more incremental movement that you can do sitting, standing and walking...it's not a set of specific exercises but more a way of moving all the time (though In "8 Steps to a Pain Free Back" there are a set of more rigorous exercises in the back of the book).
The second and perhaps more important difference between the two books lies in their approach to what is the natural and most mechanically advantageous shape of the spine. Foundation assumes the ideal of an "S" shaped curve in the spine and does not address any other ideal. In contrast, the Gokhale Method views the "S" shape as a more recent cultural development that started only in the past 80 years or so (8 Steps provides a historical/anthropological discussion of this cultural shift which I will not go into here...I find it FASCINATING). So prior to the 1920's Esther Gokhale would say that people had more of a "J" shaped spine...one that is relatively without curve until you reach L5-S1. In order to preserve the wedge shape of the L5-S1 curve, the Gokhale Method encourages movement that will, over time, restore the "J" shaped spine. As I understand it, the shape of our spines have not evolved in 90 years...that would not be possible. But our IDEA of what the spine should like as evolved...in unfortunate ways that increase the potential for back pain. If this interests you, get the book...I don't want to go into it any further here.
A view into how an "S" shaped spine versus a "J" shaped spine so dramatically informs movement can be seen in how the two books approach an idea they have in common: the importance of bending at the hip instead of at the back. The photos on pages 64, 86, 102 of the Foundation book (for example) illustrate an approach to bending called "The Founder". Compare these photos to Chapter 7 in 8 Steps to a Pain Free Back. The Foundation book instructs a form of hip-hinging that the Gokhale Method would criticize as encouraging an exaggerated sway in the upper lumbar spine (around L1-L2). The Gokhale Method advises maintaining a straighter, almost plank-like spine when hip-hinging (of course, this depends on each persons flexibility...especially in the hamstrings). Both books encourage an anteverted pelvis (meaning the opposite of a tucked pelvis): The Gokhale Method would caution against over anteverting the pelvis (sticking your bum out too far) to the point of creating a sway in the back because of the resulting disc compression. Finally, if you are still reading this, another significant difference seems that the Gokhale Method focuses a lot of attention on developing all the gluts but in particular, the gluteus medius because so many of us do not develop it sufficiently. As I understand it, when you don't have a well developed glut med, you tend to recruit other muscles inappropriately which, in turn, can exacerbate lower back pain (not a doctor so someone else can weigh in here). 8 Steps devotes an entire chapter to "Glidewalking": a recipe for copying the natural gait found still in many non-industrialized countries where people experience a phenomenally low incidence of back pain compared to the US and more technologically advanced cultures. Foundation focuses on the glutes as an important component of developing core stability and does an good job of identifying the anatomy necessary to engage core muscles...uses easy to understand and simplified, intelligent descriptions.
OK, finally, gotta say I loved the photos in the Foundation with the overlay of muscles...very cool. Also great: the nutritional information included at the end of the book. All in all, I'm more interested in the Gokhale Method because I want to change the way I move entirely, not just have exercises (even if they successfully alleviate back pain...which I have, of course...or I wouldn't have read these books or written this tome!)
So there you have it S vs. J. Gentlepersons, start your engines!

Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies Review

Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When diabetics think of diet, the word that comes to mind is restriction. As you read and work with this volume, which is much more than a cookbook, you'll lose the negativity that governs so many diabetics' thinking, and feeling, about food. It's a liberating volume.
Plus the recipes are easy, interesting, and exciting. For the recipes that I've tried, I found all the ingredients readily available in any supermarket. Preparation methods and times are keyed to busy lifestyles. Most take a half-hour or less.
But more importantly, the information about food and meals is presented in such an engaging way that I found myself excited about working on my diet. Believe me, until I read this book, about the last thing I wanted to do was read a diabetic cookbook. To me the very idea of a diabetic cookbook previously had been one of rules, restrictions, no-nos, and dullness.
From the very first page -- on which Dr Rubin and Ms Stach help you figure out exactly and specifically what your daily food intake ought to be, given your own individual condition, -- the authors are intent on making eating fun, and a positive, integral element in controlling your diabetes.
Dr. Rubin clearly presents information on such recent developments as the glycemic index and on how to time medications around meal times. His insights on how to deal with medications when eating out are enormously helpful.
This a modern book, keyed not only to science and nutrition, but also to our lifestyles. The authors don't utter instructions - they walk you through typical experiences. I travel a lot and learned a lot from the "road trips" in the book where in the authors actually sit you down in restaurants as varied as McDonald's, Denny's, and even the Ritz Carlton.
"Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies" is full of real-life insight, and is written in a friendly, companionable fashion.
As a diabetic, thinking about diet used to just give me a headache. Now, as a result of having read and absorbed so much of the information in Dr. Rubin's "Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies", diet is no longer a pitfall and a burden, but fun, and a powerful tool in controlling my diabetes.
This is the one food book a diabetic needs. It's the food book every diabetic should have.
Really terrific.

The Complete Book of Abs: Revised and Expanded Edition Review

The Complete Book of Abs: Revised and Expanded Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased about 10 books from Amazon on abs in order to compare them. This one has quite a bit of information, good lay-out and organization, and is well-written for this type of book. My conclusions on how it compares with the other books follow...
If You Want to Trim Your Waistline: You can't trim your waistline without losing fat, and you can't lose fat around your waist without losing it everywhere (focusing on a muscle group like the abdominal muscles doesn't burn fat in that location, just a little bit of fat from everywhere on the body). So, if you want to trim your waistline, skip the ab workout books and go with a good, proven overall weight loss and fitness book like Bill Phillips' Body for Life. The Abs Diet is a similar program, but like all the Men's Health publications, it advertises a 6-week transformation, which is just a little unrealistic. Plan on more like 12-24 weeks to see really noticeable changes if you are fat.
If You Want Sculpted Six-Pack Abs: If you are overweight at all, see above--you can't get a six pack while you're overweight, and you can't lose abdominal fat by doing an ab workout, so go for overall fitness. However, if you are already lean, see below.
If You Want to Strengthen or Build Your Ab Muscles: If you're trying to improve for work, play, or rehab, you might consider the following books: The Body Sculpting Bible for Abs Deluxe DVD Edition contains decently up-to-date information and tells you exactly what to do and when to do it, based on a six-week fitness course. If you're looking for a similar book with more information, you can choose from The Complete Book of Abs or The Complete Book of Core Training. The Complete Book of Abs (1998) is a little out of date in terms of its dietary/nutritional recommendations, but it focuses more on exercises that develop the external abdominal muscles (the ones you see in a six-pack), including lots of variations on leg lifts, bicycle motion, and sit-ups. It will also give you more resources for creating your own program, and, if that's what you want to do, go with this one instead of The Body Sculpting Bible. The Complete Book of Core Training (2006) focuses more on the functional body core, including internal abdominal muscles, legs, etc., and includes more trendy exercises using medicine balls, exercise balls, yoga, etc. A different sort of book is Stronger Abs and Back (1997), which was written before the current fad of selling "core training," but contains the elements of core training because it gives good functional sports-focused advice. Its dietary recommendations are out of date, but it recommends a 24-week workout plan, which is much more realistic than the 6-week plans advocated by many of the other books.
If You Have Back Pain: See your doctor, and if he prescribes abdominal/core strengthening, see above.
My one-book recommendation: Body for Life.
My two-book recommendation: Body for Life + Stronger Abs and Back.
My three-book recommendation: Body for Life + Stronger Abs and Back + The Complete Book of Abs.
My four-book recommendation: Body for Life + Stronger Abs and Back + The Complete Book of Abs + The Abs Diet.
Hope this helps!!

The Eat-Clean Diet Recharged: Lasting Fat Loss That's Better than Ever Review

The Eat-Clean Diet Recharged: Lasting Fat Loss That's Better than Ever
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the original _Eat-Clean Diet_ book when it came out a few years ago, and used the principles in it to lose sixteen pounds (two dress sizes). Recently, I've been a little more lax in my eating, so I purchased this book last week to help motivate me to get back on track with my eating for the new year.
Before purchasing this newer edition, I was worried that it would be very similar to the first version of the book, but, as Reno explains, it contains over 100 pages of new text. While there are some chapters that are similar in both books (like chapters on the importance of drinking water and eating breakfast), there are a lot of new ideas. If you are trying to decide whether to purchase the older, original edition of this book or this one, I would recommend buying this one since it contains more recent information about nutritional studies. If, like me, you already own the original book, I think you'll still find the ideas in here useful and inspirational.
I find Reno to be very motivating, and, if you're struggling to lose weight, you will probably find her books really helpful. The idea behind clean eating is that you eat foods that are as close to their natural state as possible, without adding in extra sugar, chemicals, etc. Eating six meals a day ensures that you never go hungry, and you don't have to worry about calorie counting.
Another great feature of this book is that she includes a vegan meal plan in it. The first edition was very centered around meat, which made it difficult for me (as a lacto-ovo vegetarian) to see how I could incorporate all of her suggestions since I wasn't about to gnaw on a chicken breast as my morning snack.
Reno also focuses much more in this edition on the environmental effects that our food choices have, citing Michael Pollan's work and the principles of films like _Food, Inc._. Since I am concerned with environmental issues, I really liked this new focus on eating locally and sustainably.
This book also contains 50 new recipes. I have not tried any of them yet, but will be sure to update my review after I have tried a few. The inclusion of quite a few vegetarian recipes is another nice feature.
I first discovered Reno in _Oxygen_ fitness magazine, where she is a monthly columnist, and last year was happy to see that Robert Kennedy Publishing (the group that publishes Reno's book and _Oxygen_) began a new magazine called _Clean Eating_. If you want even more seasonal, healthy recipes and nutrition tips, I definitely recommend subscribing to it. Just be warned, however, that it contains a lot of ads promoting Reno's books -- to an annoying degree. If you can look past those ads, it makes a nice addition to a clean-eating lifestyle.UPDATE ON 3/1/10: I've made a few of the recipes, and all of them have turned out to be really good! In my original review, I accidentally said that the book has over 15 new recipes, but it actually has 50 new ones. If you have the original version of this, you definitely don't *need* this newer version, but the updates and success stories make it a nice addition to my collection of health books.

The Beginning Runner's Handbook: The Proven 13-Week Walk-Run Program Review

The Beginning Runner's Handbook: The Proven 13-Week Walk-Run Program
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I started tentatively, being 85 pounds overweight, a couch potato, and an overeater (obviously), with bad knees and a bad back but I knew I had to do SOMETHING to start participating in my own life and destiny. If you're in a similar spot, and you've gotten as far as "What", this book is a tool that will give you the "Hows."
Written economically and informally, it's packed with information beginning runners and walkers need, from stretching and shoe selection to injury prevention. The heart of the program is an easy-to-follow schedule that starts slow (run 30 seconds, then walk 4:30, and repeat seven times your first day) and builds every week. The plan is flexible, simple, and requires nothing more than a watch, a pair of shoes, and your commitment to yourself three times per week. If you're completely sedentary, you can start with the 13-week walk program to build your stamina before taking on running. And there's an intermediate program, when you're done with your first 13 weeks of running and looking for the "next cut."
At the end of thirteen weeks, I was running 65 minutes without stopping, I had shed 35 pounds, I avoided injury and felt BETTER than when I started. I was having FUN! I realized that completing the program was about far more than running -- I had a grip on my destiny, and I was participating in life, not just watching everyone else. I realized, in my bones, that I can do ANYTHING, and breathing hard three times a week seemed a small price to pay for that. Now I look forward to my runs, and haven't missed a running day since I started over a year ago, and all 85 extra pounds are gone for good. If you're committed to yourself, this book is the tool you need.

The Fat Burning Diet: Accessing Unlimited Energy for a Lifetime Review

The Fat Burning Diet: Accessing Unlimited Energy for a Lifetime

For years I followed a fat free diet but could never lose that last 15 pounds or 3 inches from my waist. I have employed this diet for three years. It's easy to follow, I've never had more energy, I had to alter my entire wardrobe of slacks and, at age 42, my body fat percentage is about 10%. I reccomend Robb's book and diet plan.

THE FAT BURNING DIETBy Jay Robb256 pages (softbound)A HEALTHY APPROACH TO LOW-CARB DIETING!Low-carb mania is sweeping the nation as Americans become carb-conscious in their quest to lose weight. While low-carb dieting can be effective in the short run, cutting carbs long term can carry many potential drawbacks, health risks, and challenges. An extreme low-carb diet can be monotonous, boring, too high in saturated fat, too low in fresh fruits and vegetables, too low in fiber, too high in meat, and fattening because it is high in calories.CUT CARBS, LOSE WEIGHT, AND GAIN HEALTH! Jay Robb has discovered the secret to healthy low-carb eating, which he outlines in his newly revised book, The Fat Burning Diet. The technique he created is called "carb-cycling," where the dieter eats low-carb meals one day and high-carb meals the next day. Then the cycle is repeated. It's that simple. EAT CARBS WITHOUT GETTING FAT!As a clinical nutritionist, Jay teaches glycogen management, which allows the dieter to sidestep the fat-storing cycle. Glycogen is carbohydrate that is stored in the muscle and liver. When a person cuts carbs, glycogen is depleted as the body begins burning fat as its primary source of fuel, while converting stored glycogen to glucose for secondary energy needs. The average person can store approximately 350-400 grams of carbohydrate as glycogen. The human body will convert excess carbs to glycogen first, instead of turning those carbs into fat. So the secret to permanent weight loss is to keep glycogen levels in check. Once a person lowers glycogen levels, then he or she can eat carbs safely until glycogen levels are full. Then the dieter must return to low-carb eating or run the risk of getting fat. This is why carb-cycling on The Fat Burning Diet allows a person to safely eat healthy high-carb foods every other day.In the pages of The Fat Burning Diet, you will discover:1. –how to safely eat carbs every other day without getting fat. Now you can eat the carbs you love without feeling guilty!2. –how to lose all the weight you want, without even trying! Once and for all, you will stop worrying about your weight and start enjoying your new energized life!3. –how to turn a slow metabolism into a fat-burning furnace! You will be energized, and your metabolism will be running on high, which can melt away fat like butter in a microwave!4. –how protein can keep your mind focused and your memory sharp! You may be able to score higher on tests, keep your thoughts focused, accomplish more, and remember everything that is important in your life!5. –which supplements can help you gain energy and lose fat! You can stop wasting your money on useless supplements and focus on the ones your body truly needs!6. –an instant breakfast that requires only minutes to prepare but will supercharge your body. Now you can easily have a great fat-burning breakfast every morning without ever being late to work or school and slaving over the stove!7. –how to eliminate carbohydrate addiction and chronic hunger and feel truly satisfied after a meal. You may no longer be a slave to food or have the desire to binge!8. –which carbohydrates are safe and which ones can put you to sleep. You will no longer be tired and sleepy after a meal or snack so that you can be an energy dynamo from sunup to sundown. 9. –how you can eat all that you want and anything you want once a week without blowing the diet! In fact, I encourage this once-a-week "ANYTHING GOES" meal so that you will never be deprived of any foods you truly love! 10.–why diets that are TOO LOW in carbohydrate can limit your energy supply and stop you from losing weight. You can end your frustration with those typical low-carbohydrate diets that can crowd out all the good carbs! No more severe carb restriction. In fact, I encourage you to eat plenty of the right carbohydrates at the right times! Twelve years of research was required to develop this uniquely satisfying and effective diet plan than can dramatically change the way you look and feel. If you are serious about your life, your looks, and your health, The Fat Burning Diet is a must-read for you. This 256-page softbound classic is complete with easy-to-understand information, exciting menus, delicious recipes, inspiring quotes, and humorous antidotes on the world of weight loss. The Spark: The 28-Day Breakthrough Plan for Losing Weight, Getting Fit, and Transforming Your Life Review

The Spark: The 28-Day Breakthrough Plan for Losing Weight, Getting Fit, and Transforming Your Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this book because a friend lost 40 pounds in the last 10 months and was raving about Spark and the SparkPeople website. So I bought this and I'm happy I listened to her. I think this book is necessary for anyone trying to lose weight even if you don't use the diet or exercise information in it.
This book is more than just diet and exercise. It's inspirational and the focus is on you as a person and gently nudges you into creating a better lifestyle in an easy manner for yourself. Diet and exercise come after that for true and permanent weight loss. That's a big distinction from other diet and exercise books.
There's incredible support at the SparkPeople website. In fact, you should definitely join up there in order to get the most out of this book.
One of the biggest reasons people fail at weight loss is because they don't have any positive support that they can fall back. So maximize the benefits of this book by joining the website to get the kind of support that will propel you to success. It's free.
Like another reviewer mentioned, this program successfully connects weight loss with all the other aspects of your life instead of having a disconnect or wall between weight loss and the rest of your life.
Spark is great for taking information from other books and programs that have more of the nuts and bolts of fast weight loss tricks and meshing them into your life without making weight loss a burden and a big struggle.
I've personally lost 24 pounds and 3.5 inches from my waist in 5 weeks (a lot faster weight loss than my friend) by using this Spark book, the SparkPeople website for support, The 5-Second Flat Belly Secret - Lose 2-3 Inches from Your Belly in Less Than 1 Month for targeted fat loss from my stomach and waist, 5-Minute Miracle Exercises: Lose 5 Pounds in 2 Weeks - Only 5 Minutes a Day! for quick fat loss workouts at home, and The Mediterranean Diet: (author To Come) as the basis for my diet.
I should say that I got 2 of those books because I saw them on the "customers who bought this item also bought" list for Spark. That's a great resource to use to find complimentary books on Amazon.
Spark is definitely worth buying.

The Eat-Clean Diet Cookbook: Great-Tasting Recipes That Keep You Lean Review

The Eat-Clean Diet Cookbook: Great-Tasting Recipes That Keep You Lean
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having lost a ton of weight, and apparently good at keeping it off, Tosca Reno decided to write this book after her bestselling The Eat-Clean Diet: Fast Fat-Loss that lasts Forever!. I guess it was so popular that there was a demand for Eat Clean Recipes. After looking at the book, I can see why.
First off, if you're looking for any detailed explanations of the Eat Clean diet, you won't find it here- check out her other book instead, The Eat-Clean Diet: Fast Fat-Loss that lasts Forever!. But just to give you a very brief overview, it's a nutritional plan that maximizes your intake of protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants by incorporating "whole foods" from every group. Some of the Clean Eating Principles include things such as: eat 5-6 small meals a day, eat every 2-3 hrs., avoid saturated fats, and stick to proper portion sizes. As you can see, it's healthy and sensible.
Anyway, the book is just loaded with recipes. A little bit about the layout. Major recipe sections include breakfast, soup, grains, sauces, one-dish and easy meals, proteins, vegetables, pasta, sweets and breads, and festive occasions. Most notable, perhaps, is that each recipe tells you the nutritional breakdown (total calories, fat calories, protein, carbs, fiber, sugars, fat, and sodium). Also included is the approximate preparation AND cook time. Nice!
So needless to say, I was well-pleased with the book. It's practical and healthy. A must-have if you're an Eat Clean fan or if you're just looking for a few healthy recipes. Readers trying to make healthy lifestyle changes might also be interested in The Sixty-Second Motivator.

Forever Fit: The Easy-to-Follow, Step-by-Step Life Plan to Improve Your Body and Mind Review

Forever Fit: The Easy-to-Follow, Step-by-Step Life Plan to Improve Your Body and Mind
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In January 2005, I weighed 178 lbs and had 13% body fat. I didn't consider myself overweight or out of shape for a 5'9, 31 yr old man, but I knew I had some work to do. I've read Men's Health and Men's Fitness Magazine's, I considered myself knowledgeable in the ways of nutrition and training. To keep myself in shape for the winter, my wife and I began taking spinning classes (Rick was one of the instructors). His first "coaching" tip was to purchase a Heart Rate Monitor. That tip revolutionized my training.
After several months of spinning and picking Rick's brain, I decided to join Team Kattouf. My goals were to be a better cyclist, runner, and to improve my overall health. After my first conversation with him, I knew I had made a wise decision. He took all the guesswork out of nutrition and training. I cannot believe how simple his nutrition program was to implement into my daily routine without any major disruptions or sacrifices. Not only did Rick make a change in my diet but he also changed the way I worked out.
Thanks to Rick, and the guidelines & principles he has set forth in "Forever Fit", I have successfully surprised all of my goals and then some. Just six weeks into my training with Rick my body weight had dropped to 163 lbs and my body fat to 10%. At the end of 18 weeks of training, my body weight had dropped to 160 lbs and my body fat to 8% (please note my initial goal was not to lose a large amount of weight). I am running the fastest times of my life. I am competing in multiple 5k races and Duathlons (and finishing competitively). The most important is that I am having fun and feel great.
Forever Fit is definately worth the small investment of money and time.

Men's Health Muscle Chow: More Than 150 Meals to Feed Your Muscles and Fuel Your Workouts Review

Men's Health Muscle Chow: More Than 150 Meals to Feed Your Muscles and Fuel Your Workouts

It's hard to find a decent clean-eating cookbook. This one certainly is decent, but I wouldn't give it much more praise than that. There are some recipes that are pretty good and all of them are quite straightforward, but my major problem with the book is that some of the recipes are complete fluff that could have been all compiled onto a single page ("quick bites", or something like that). For instance, the "Fix and Eat Sardine Sandwich". Now, I'm going from memory here, but I'm pretty sure that the steps boiled down to these steps: Take two slices of bread, spread mustard on each slice, then put the sardines between the two pieces of bread and eat them. Sorry, Gregg, but I'm a healthy eater, not someone who's never been in a kitchen before. There are other recipes like this ("Slice up a head of lettuce and serve it with mustard as dipping sauce", for example) that are really wastes of space.
Also, it would have been good to see more explanation regarding carb-cycling (or carb-shifting as he describes it), along with macronutrient breakdowns for the different eating phases Gregg describes in the book.
There's some good stuff in here, that's for sure, but it's too much like a fluffernutter sandwich: lots of healthy potential surrounded, unfortunately, by too much fluff.

The Abs Diet for Women: The Six-Week Plan to Flatten Your Belly and Firm Up Your Body for Life Review

The Abs Diet for Women: The Six-Week Plan to Flatten Your Belly and Firm Up Your Body for Life

My husband and I went on the Abs Diet last year and did great. I saw this new book and thought maybe I could tailor the Abs Diet for me, as a woman. I thought things would be a little more differentiated, but the changes from the "men's" book are minimal. The recipes and basic concepts are the same. A lot of the book focuses on post-baby weight, which is not my concern (yet). The testimonials are from women and the exercises are photos of women, but other than that, it's not really any different than the men's version. If you're both trying out the diet, you might as well stick to the men's version and save a few bucks. But, if it's just you (and you're a woman), then give this "diet" a shot.
We had great results and felt a lot better eating the recommended foods. Beyond that, you don't even start the exercises 'til you're 3 weeks into the program! Great for those who need to ease into a new diet/program.

The Eat-Clean Diet for Men: Your Ironclad Plan for a Lean Physique Review

The Eat-Clean Diet for Men: Your Ironclad Plan for a Lean Physique

This book has worked wonders for me! Since beginning this "lifestyle change" (not really a diet), I have already lost 23 pounds so far and am losing about 2 pounds per week. Of course I exercise as well, but I had been exercising the same way before and was not losing weight. This lifestyle change has had a positive effect on my entire family. My wife, who was already petite, looks even better and my 14 year old daughter has lost 10 lbs! The whole family had bought in. We are enjoying coming up with new recipes and we spend more time cooking and eating together.
Another unintended consequence of this lifestyle change is that it has saved us money! We used to eat out quite a bit. We would spend nearly $700 per month eating at restaurants and fast foods!! Trust me, it's not hard to do if you eat out 2-3 times per week with an average ticket of $50-$60. So far this month (through August 23rd), we've spent just $32 on dining out! Last month, we spent $74! We are saving over $600 a month because we cook at home instead of eating out. Unbelievably, we are also spending less on groceries. I am very surprised by this because I, like most people, thought that clean (healthier) foods would cost a lot more. Well, that's not true! You would be surprised as to how much unclean foods in the grocery cart add up. Chips, soda, frozen pizza & beer = $$$$$. Now that we don't buy those foods and very little alcohol (only wine occasionally), we spend a lot less on groceries overall and have more to spend on lean meats, vegetables and fruit.
I highly recommend this book! It has changed out lives for the better!

The Asian Diet: Get Slim and Stay Slim the Asian Way (Capital Lifestyles) Review

The Asian Diet: Get Slim and Stay Slim the Asian Way (Capital Lifestyles)

Tran's book was an unexpected treat. These are not exotic or complicated Asian recipes, but they produce good tasting Asian dishes, that are either naturally low-fat, or adapted (less emphasis on protein, reduced oil when possible, the use of low-fat coconut milk, for example.) The ingredients are readily available in most supermarkets. There are menu plans available which promise weight loss, but I just use the recipes. (The peanut sauce for the satays is great--and I even modified it more with lower-fat peanut butter.) These are nice recipes for introducing one's family to Asian cuisine--particularly Thai and Vietnamese. I also enjoyed the photographs of Tran and her family, which personalized the book for me.
